Contending for Climate Change: “Let justice roll down like waters”

I live in a region nicknamed the Garden Spot, and while one sees plenty of corn, wheat, and other crops flourishing in abundance, one rarely sees orange trees. Why? To grow oranges in this area would be a real challenge. Orange trees need warmer temperatures, a specific amount of rainfall, and sandy soil that drains away water in order to thrive. While tending my garden one day, the Lord spoke to me of this difficulty in getting certain things to grow because of an environment that is conducive to certain plants but hostile to others. “In the same way, I want the fruit of the kingdom of...

“Lift up your heads, O gates, that the King of glory may come in!”

“Lift up your heads, O gates, that the King of glory may come in!”

For the last twelve months the Lord has highlighted, impressed upon me, and essentially flooded my consciousness with the word “gates.” Everywhere in scripture I keep seeing it pop up. My prayer journal is peppered with the word. Fellow believers with whom I share this each have a different interpretation of the significance of the word “gates;” I’ve written each one down and pondered them because I believe all are potentially valid. One passage in particular God seemed to highlight is regarding Samson. “Now Samson [was with a prostitute] until midnight, and at midnight he arose...

Three Things You Hear When You’re Burdened to Pray for the Nation

If you’re passionate about the direction of the nation, and if you hunger and thirst for righteousness in your land, perhaps at some point you’ve been chided for your zeal. In my last post, I shared my own testimony of not knowing what to do with the burden I carried for my country, but how the Lord kept showing me He would not have given me such a heart to care if He did not intend to answer the desires of my heart, specifically as they pertained to the nation. Here are three things I’ve heard Christians say to fellow believers or even to themselves over the years, usually as a...

Called to Intercede for Your Nation

Called to Intercede for Your Nation

Some things require care when mixing, such as ministry and money, pastoring and politics. As such, there’s a tendency simply to play it safe and keep them separate. John Newton, ex-slave captain and writer of the hymn “Amazing Grace,” said of his friend William Wilberforce, the British Member of Parliament, “I hope the Lord will make him a blessing both as a Christian and a statesman. How seldom do these two characters coincide! But they are not incompatible.” Wilberforce devoted his entire life to ending the African Slave Trade in the West Indies, and saw his goal realized just...

Blessed are those who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

Blessed are those who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness

Is there something in you that comes undone when you hear a report of child abuse? Or that cancer has taken another life, despite the prayers of the saints? Perhaps you’re rattled by the lack of accountability among media, corporate, and political moguls who seem to get away with unbelievable wickedness. What about personal rightness with God? Are you crestfallen when you realize you’ve sinned against the Holy One of Israel? We stand in the righteousness of Christ; yet the knowledge that there is grace doesn’t – or shouldn’t – annihilate the personal sorrow when we know that...

The Keys of the Kingdom

The Keys of the Kingdom

Not long ago I was finishing my devotions, and I sensed the Lord urging me back for a moment. I sat down and told Him I was listening, and then I wrote down three things I heard Him say. The very last thing I heard was, “I have given you the keys of the kingdom.” Not a minute after I jotted it down, I heard the chime of a text come across my phone. A friend had written, “Matthew 16:19” and said God was restoring “keys of authority.” Matthew 16:19 says “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven,...

Do You Need to Remind God?

Do You Need to Remind God?

Do you need to remind God of something? The Hebrew word Zakar means “to call to mind, bring to mind, to record, to mark, to mention, to take note of, to make a memorial.” There is a pattern in scripture of God’s people actively bringing things to His attention, or reminding Him, particularly in times of avid distress. Things God remembers/remembered: His covenant His word Individuals (Abraham, Rachel, Hannah, et al) His lovingkindness His people’s enemies the foolish man’s reproach the afflicted Our sacrifices (Ps. 20:3) Our tears His congregation Human...
